Changing Leadership in City Energy and Utilities Division

Robert Nicolay, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) with the City of Medicine Hat is pleased to announce the appointment of Brad Maynes as Commissioner of Energy and Utilities. Cal Lenz, the current commissioner, will retire from this role at the end of May, 2019.

Maynes has been with the City of Medicine Hat since 2014 as the General Manager of Natural Gas and Petroleum Resources (NGPR). Prior to that, he held a VP role with StatOil in Calgary. With an extensive background in energy across North America, Maynes is a highly regarded and respected geologist and energy executive with a broad network of domestic and international contacts.

“Brad is a strategic thinker and an extraordinary leader with a deep understanding of how we can continue moving our energy and utilities operations forward. The division has highly competent leadership in key roles to assist him in electric generation, water and sewer, distribution and commercial systems,” says Nicolay. “Brad, has proven performance in the industry and can provide the leadership needed in this complex portfolio.”

The appointment of Maynes to the commissioner is a result of deliberate succession planning at the City. “During Cal’s time with the City, he made succession planning a priority,” says Nicolay.

As the Commissioner of Energy and Utilities, Mayne’s portfolio will include Utilities Distribution Services, Electric Generation, Environmental Utilities, Utilities Business Development and Support, and NGPR.

Mayne’s appointment is effective June 1, 2019, though Maynes’ transition into the position with Lenz will commence immediately.
