Update Your Voter Registration When You File Your Taxes!

It's tax filing season again and Elections Canada invites all Canadian citizens filing their income taxes to check "Yes" on their income tax form to share their basic information with Elections Canada. This is the easiest way for citizens to make sure they are registered at the correct address and ready to vote at the 2019 federal election. On their T1 tax form, filers are asked whether they are a Canadian citizen and whether they will allow the Canada Revenue Agency to share their name, address, date of birth and citizenship with Elections Canada.

Elections Canada uses this information to update the National Register of Electors, the permanent, continually updated database of Canadians eligible to vote in federal elections. Elections Canada takes precautions to ensure that the information in the Register is kept secure and used for authorized purposes only.

  • By checking "yes" every year, Canadian citizens can be sure their federal voter registration is always up to date and that they will appear correctly on the list of electors at a federal election.
  • When a federal election is called, registered electors will receive a personalized voter information card in the mail that confirms that they are ready to vote and provides information on when, where and ways to vote.
