Business Beat: Make it a Local First Holiday Season

You know the holidays are just around the corner because whether you’re watching television or on your phone, ads keep popping up to remind us that we need to get that perfect gift for someone special.

The good news is that you can combine getting the perfect gift with helping out our local businesses.

The Chamber has always pushed supporting our local economy, and this year it is more important than ever. Launching the Local First YXH campaign earlier this year, we wanted to emphasize how important it is to keep our local dollars circulating in our region. Local First is simple. It’s one purchase, a recommendation, a gift card, a take out order, or a shout-out on social media. You don’t need to have a huge following to let your friends know about a great local attraction, fantastic customer service or the unique product you had to have.

We’re building on the Local First movement by adding some holiday spirit.

12 Days of Local First will showcase the diversity of our business community. We’ll be profiling different categories of businesses throughout the first two weeks of December and asking businesses of all sizes to jump on board and engage with us on social media to let us know what they have to offer. With all the different types of businesses in our community, we know that consumers will have no trouble making those gift purchases!

And for anyone looking for a deal, you’ll be happy to know that we’ve got our Christmas Shopping Coupons set to go just in time for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We’ll be sending out these coupons in a special edition of our newsletter and putting them out on our Facebook page too.

Nothing kicks off the holiday season like Midnight Madness. This signature event has been a favourite of Hatters for years. We couldn’t be more excited to join the festivities this year with our Midnight Madness Mini-Market. With safety precautions in place, we’re opening up the Chamber office on November 20th from 4 – 10 pm and showcasing fifteen vendors. If you want to know what businesses will be participating, check out the event on our Facebook page. So while you’re downtown, remember to walk up the 6th Avenue SE hill to 4th Street, and we’ll have the lights on and the Christmas music playing to greet you in holiday style!

This year has been so different but what has remained the same is the ripple-effect we can all make when we come together. So let’s choose to support our local businesses this holiday season as we know they are the ones contributing to local charities, not-for-profits, service clubs and sports teams all year long. Choose to show local some love and make this season a Local First Holiday Season!
