Member News: City Waste Management Facility Receives Recycling Award of Excellence
On Thursday, September 5 the City’s Waste Management Facility was honoured with a Collection Site Award of Excellence at the 2019 Alberta Coordinated Action for Recycling Enterprises (CARE) Conference held in Peace River, Alberta.
The award was presented in recognition of the City’s exceptional dedication to providing Electronics, Paint and Tire Collection sites that are organized, convenient and safe for the community to use. Accepting on behalf of the City’s Environmental Utilities Department was Shane Briggs, Solid Waste Collections Superintendent.

The award was presented in recognition of the City’s exceptional dedication to providing Electronics, Paint and Tire Collection sites that are organized, convenient and safe for the community to use. Accepting on behalf of the City’s Environmental Utilities Department was Shane Briggs, Solid Waste Collections Superintendent.
“Medicine Hat’s Waste Management Facility incorporates the principles of Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle and Recover into our daily routine in order to ensure that a wide variety of recycling and diversion disposal options that remain easily accessible,” Briggs notes. “It is important to recognize the participation of residents who take the initiative to recycle and divert items rather than dispose of them. Residents have also been enthusiastic participants in our residential recycling program which also contributes to waste diversion from our landfill site.”
Caroline McAuley, Chair of Alberta Recycling, presented the award to Mr. Briggs, indicating that “Medicine Hat has shown a lot of pride by making their facility world-class and they rightfully have bragging rights as being one of the best.”
Medicine Hat is a member of Alberta CARE, along with many other municipalities, government organizations, industries, recycling groups and environmental organizations. Since 1994, Alberta CARE has focused its efforts on programs, education and knowledge to support recycling and waste management strategies, and divert waste from landfill sites.
Alberta Recycling is a not-for-profit association responsible for managing the province’s electronics, paint, tire and used oil materials recycling programs. These programs are among the best nationally and internationally, recycling to date 119.9 million tires, 9.7 million televisions and computer products, 24.9 million litres of paint and 1.7 billion litres of used oil. Municipalities and Indigenous communities play a key role by providing over 440 recycling depots for their residents to recycle this material.
“Thanks to Alberta Recycling for recognizing our dedicated staff who continually strive for improvement, with a strong customer service focus,” adds Lora Brennan, General Manager of Environmental Utilities. “The City appreciates opportunities to learn and discover best practices from Alberta CARE and other municipalities. We also appreciate the residents who bring electronics, paint and tires to the Landfill to be recycled. These programs divert waste from the landfill, which is our ultimate goal.”
